If electronic dance music ever gets its own This Is Spinal Tap-like parody, The Crystal Method would have to be the film’s hard-partying, amplifier-past-10 inspiration. Not that there’s anything wrong with that: Since the mid-1990s Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland have been injecting dance music with a rockist sense of urgency. It’s just that TCM is a stadium band for the 21st century, sans the British accents, but definitely with the rock-star appetites.

And so it was quite a treat to see the pair performing a surprise, invite-only show early Saturday night at the Echoplex in Echo Park for a crowd of a few hundred people. The performance was part of a promotion from the Avid/Digidesign/Pro Tools software and M-Audio hardware folks, who help make electronic dance music possible on the back end. While you’re more likely to see an act like TCM dishing out its latest work (Divided By Night) via turntables because it’s simply more cost-effective, the Echoplex crowd was treated to a full-on live experience that featured an array of digital toys.

Colin Young-Wolff Colin Young-Wolff Jordan and Kirkland, both in trademark black, prowled around the stage and sampled a buffet of gear that included a laptop, keyboards, controllers and pads as a screen behind them flickered with the alien, globe-like logo from their latest album. It was a digital head-bangers ball from the minute Kirkland grabbed a microphone and twisted his gear to staccato, talk-box mode: “Welcome Los Angeles; welcome Glendale Boulevard; we are the Crystal fucking Method.” Colin Young-Wolff Colin Young-Wolff The first third of the hour-long set focused on the duo’s latest material, which has the rubbery bass-lines and synthetic urgency of “nu school breaks” and its brethren, dubstep. But by mid-set, the pair was mixing in its classic material and blending in the kind of 4/4 beats that so many break-beat artists (Adam Freeland being a good example) have turned to. TCM’s trademark breaks, which keep the metronome timing of 4/4 without the constant kick drum emphasis (think Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow”), are ass-moving, but they don’t resonate with the boom-tss mandate of contemporary dance floors. Colin Young-Wolff The set was sequenced, DJ style, and Jordan and Kirkland banged their heads like guitar heroes. They tweaked their pads — ugly, gurning faces and all — like Eddie Van Halen strokes his strings. The pair practically invented this kind of live, digital performance, and it has mastered the sometimes-awkward interplay between dance-floor oriented sets and devil-horns rock shows. This was hair metal in the age of chipsets and processors. During one interlude, Kirkland mentioned to the crowd how the pair had made one particular track “15 years ago.” It doesn’t seem like that long ago until you realize that, back then, what they were doing was underground, the concession table’s $20 t-shirts and $10 CDs would have been priced the other way around, and a Jesse Jackson-sampling track such as “Now Is The Time” (1994) presented a prelude to a dream called Barack Obama. They say that rock ‘n’ roll will never die – and this EDM thing is a wholly different beast – but if rockers acknowledge the bluesy soul and black ghosts in the futuristic machinery of TCM, then maybe the saying is right after all. Deconstruction Records was founded in 1987 and they unfortunately had to stop their work in 2001. With many great artist publishing their tracks on this label it was hard for some to witness the end of Deconstruction Records. Now Deconstruction Records is up and running again and will bring out re-releases! Last August Sasha’s Xpander got re-launched. Being one of the most profound CD’s Sasha released. This can be found at the Beatport website.

Deconstruction has a reputation for being cutting-edge, contemporary dance music. This label released many dance hits over the years, and worked with artists in a wide range of dance perspective. Black Box, M People, Sasha, Republica, Kylie Minogue, N Joi and many others flourished this label

Sony has announced the relaunch of Deconstruction Records. In a joint venture between Sony’s Senior Vice President of A&R Mike Pickering, one of the founder members, and Three Six Zero Group’s AnD press, the dance imprint will return with a series of back catalogue releases before signing new artists later in the year.

Deconstruction Records was founded in 1987 and ran until 2001. It quickly gained a strong reputation for cutting-edge, contemporary dance music. Beyond signing the major crossover dance hits of the time, the label excelled in developing artists such as Black Box, M People, Way Out West, Sasha, Republica, Kylie Minogue, N Joi, and many more, and was at the forefront of the Italo house movement. Deconstruction was also the parent label for Concrete Recordings, responsible for acts such as Lionrock, Death In Vegas, Dub Pistols, and others.

After Sasha’s re-release more artist will bring out their productions. Last September Lionrock’s ‘Packet Of Peace’, complete with the seminal Chemical Brothers’ remix, was released. And in the end of this year new artist will get signed in on this label. So stay tuned for more upcoming surprises!

It’s not easy making a run at success in EDM these days; it seems you have to be a DJ, producer, promoter, booker and manager to be even considered for a break. It’s more than a full time job to wear the hats of all the above and when you have a 9-5, it makes sticking with it even that more difficult.

One dude who has stuck with it and only gotten better in the process is Alex Fish aka Holosound. Alex has been grinding it out in the Big Apple for over six years now. He’s faced a lot of adversity over that time, both in and out of the club scene, but his passion has never wavered and he’s seemingly more driven now than ever before.

It’s no secret that I’ve always had a bias towards the more underground talent. It’s people like Alex who have helped form this opinion. Each time we’ve booked him for a gig, every time we’ve hosted a Holosound set, Alex has been incredibly appreciative. He’s written two cerebral Holologic pieces for our site and never lets a promo mix pass by our inbox. Alex is a stand up dude through and through.

Stirring some comical debate between him and me, Alex has displayed phenomenal versatility within his sound, always working hard to satisfy the progressive house heads like the btb crew and the techy Yanks close to home. And his persistent attempts to be on the road have seen Holosound perform in some extremely exotic places, none more obscure than his most recent appearance in Tunisia.

This gig was a long time coming for Alex. He worked super hard to secure it; it’s so awesome that it finally came through. From the looks of the pics and video on his Facebook page, it was definitely a trip to remember. Man its Africa dammit!

As you can imagine there were some nervous, but energized jitters that Alex had to work through before making the trip, and no better way to get through them than by compiling two killer mixes to ready him for the journey. Congratulations Alex for fulfilling a dream, and thanks for sharing a little portion of your excitement with us. If the party was as fantastic as this sounds, you must have had the time of your life.

(San Francisco, USA) – Not long ago we announced some changes to the San Fransico LoveFest such as the name being changed to LovEvolution for 2009. There are a few other changes that were instituted that we were made aware of recently.

They are now currently charging a small fee of 10$ for admittance to the event this year. There are a number of reasons but the main reason is that the festival has grown so large they needed to expand and relocate and with increasing city fees the admittance charge is necessary.

Since this is a non-profit event, 10$ isn’t really too much to ask. Especially when there will be an abundance of floats filled with supreme talent. The line-ups and floats have been announced. Check out the list of floats below, along with their themes and the names of the artists scheduled to perform.

Evolved Radio’s participations in previous San Francisco Love Parade events:

The very first event for Love Parade event took place in San Francisco in 2004. Evolved.FM (back then known as XTC Radio) crew drove a float for the parade. It was setup and decorated with several LP records on a 25′ flat-bed truck that had been donated to us by a local music store. We had also rented a large sound system and connected it with two Pioneer CDJ1000 CD players and a pair of Technics 1200′s. Accompanied by several DJ’s including Rez, Voytek, and James Lauer. The mixing started from 11 AM until they shut it down that night and it turned out to be a great experience.

In 2005 Evolved worked with DJ’s James Lauer and Tim Heit (Relentless Beats.com) on a full semi truck trailer. The sound system was flown in from Arizona. It was a lot of fun. It was very hectic as well. There was a lot of work to be one as far as cleaning up at the end of the night. It was all worth it though to get people feeling the music on a beautiful day in the Civic Center and amazing at dusk.
