Hard work, dedication and a true love for all things techno have made Joris Voorn a household name in the techno scene. His first artist album Future History made it to Technasia’s infamous SINO label, while his remixes and EP’s ended up in the record bags of pretty much every self respecting techno DJ around. And judging by information passed to us by trusted sources, 2009 is going to be another highlight for Voorn, as there are many special projects and releases in the pipeline. But before we lose ourselves in what could be, let’s focus on what is, to put it a bit philosophical.

The acclaimed EQ Recordings imprint have asked Joris to take care of the latest instalment in the renowned Balance series. The result is due this March, and those who expect Joris to go techno on your sweet asses are wrong. Very wrong indeed…

The cool thing about the Balance series is that they offer the DJ in charge the opportunity to express themselves musically and personally. Joris Voorn’s Balance mix emphasizes this statement once more. With a whopping 102 tracks spread across 2 discs, Joris exposes a highly unique sound that goes far beyond just clubby house and techno. The first CD, dubbed the Mizuiro Mix, opens with a very spacey mix of Tadeo’s Circunbulation by Alex Under after which a 4-to-the-floor beat slowly fades is. From that point on, the mix engages into a highly versatile flow of techno, house, dub, minimal, ambient and electronica, with contributions from the likes of Basic Channel, Border Community star Westley Matsell, Dosem, Gel Abril and Minilogue. Joris aims at exposing the many unique facets of contemporary electronic music into a mesmerizing mix, and succeeds admirably. CD 1 is not a techno mix per se. It is an intense, deep and obscure trip through a myriad of genres that form jigsaw’s as solo tracks (or samples), but a complete, colourful puzzle as a whole.

The second CD, titled the Mizori mix, opens up where CD 2 ended. An entrancing collage of ambient sounds unfolds, taking the listener even deeper into the mysterious world of Joris Voorn. Oriental drums, enchanting flute melodies and soothing bass-lines form the intro, after which the mix once again explores numerous genres in electronic music. There’s some pure authentic disco, minimal grooves, basic techno beats nad straight-forward (Detroit & Chicago) house. Among the many highlights are golden tracks from the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Ame, Kettel, Prawler, Carl Craig and Radiohead as well as from Joris Voorn himself. Without engaging into carelessly copying the sound of CD 1, Joris explores many new club sounds and genres by which this mix becomes a bit more suitable for the dance-floor.

This release basically revolves around one thing: innovation. Joris uses Ableton Live to its full extent and comes up with a brilliant compilation that uses sounds, snippets and samples from 102 very different tunes. From disco to ambient and from house to minimal, Joris carefully mixes all into a deep and melodic mix that can be played over and over again. Next to being a showcase of Joris’ incredible skills, Balance 014 is among the best in its series and one of the hottest compilations to appear these months.
